SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
This project deals with the characterization of crystalline APIs (= Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients) during a continuous crystallization
process. Primarily, the real time analysis and control of the CSD (= Crystal Size Distribution) is of great importance for the process development currently performed at the RCPE. The “Partikelzähler” from Klotz GmbH will be used for the determination of the CSD. The sizes of crystals to be investigated lie in a range of 5 to 500μm.
Therefore, optical methods can be applied. The performance (accuracy, reproducibility, required material for sampling, etc.) of the used analyzer has to be tested for a variety of process conditions for efficient operation. In case of disabilities of the implemented system, adequate post processing of recorded data needs to be executed.

Applications from students pursuing (technical) chemistry, (technical)
physics, chemical / mechanical engineering, or similar fields of study are preferred.

YOUR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Learn the relevant techniques for powder characterization
- Learn the relevant techniques for CSD determinations (laser diffraction + optical methods)
- Perform experiments in order to tune the CSD-analyzer
- Learn the analysis of experimental data using MATLAB, SIPAT
